The astonishing case captured the imagination of the continent. The clever peasant Arnaud du Tilh had almost persuaded the learned judges at the Parlement of Toulouse when, on a summer's day in 1560, a man swaggered into the court on a wooden leg, denounced Arnaud, and reestablished his claim to the identity, property, and wife of Martin Guerre. ![]() Told and retold over the centuries, the story of Martin Guerre became a legend, still remembered in the Pyrenean village where the. ![]()

Throughout the novel, Bechdel works through her difficult childhood relationship with her father, Bruce, and her gradual discovery that he, too, harboured secrets from Bechdel, her mother and siblings. Told in non-chronological flashbacks to her childhood in Beech Creek, a small rural town tucked into the Allegheny Mountains, Pennsylvania, the story is also a way of Bechdel making sense of her father’s death by comparing his life to her own. Subtitled ‘A Family Tragicomic’, Fun Home is a graphic novel recounting the story of Alison Bechdel coming out as a lesbian. In this video explainer, Matt Draper considers how stories provide metaphors and archetypes to help people better understand their lives, through a discussion of literary allusions in Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel Fun Home. ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments Murderbot 3![]() If you would like to submit a happy/positive self-post about Murderbot canon or fanon and get only happy/positive comments back, write "Pro Post" somewhere in your title. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee is Dee Brown's eloquent, fully documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the nineteenth century. ![]() 5/28/2023 0 Comments Nino cipri finna![]() ![]() ![]() And it is indeed a lost grandmother that precipitates the plot of Finna. Cipri doesn’t use the name IKEA, of course, though the giant “LitenVärld” home furnishings store features the familiar garish blue-and-yellow design, and the prospect of losing a grandmother among the endless showrooms sounds entirely reasonable to anyone who’s spent time there. ![]() I suppose the giant retail emporium has served as a portal into shadowy realms at least since John Collier’s “Evening Primrose” almost eighty years ago, but the deliberately labyrinthine layout of IKEA stores seems almost designed for creepy stories – something that Nino Cipri enthusiastically takes advantage of in their novella Finna, which is partly a testy workplace romance and partly a surreal consumer-satire horror story. ![]() 5/28/2023 0 Comments Kat leyh snapdragon![]() ![]() ![]() She doesn’t like most people, just animals, and she behaves like an angry, frightened animal herself plenty of the time. Jess’s ex-boyfriend is no longer in the picture, but he clearly brought trouble. It’s not that her mom is absent-she’s very present when she’s around, but she’s working and going to school, and she needs Snap to pull her weight. ![]() She lives with her mom (Jessamine) and her dog (Good Boy) in a trailer, and pretty much takes care of herself. Snapdragon herself, who goes by Snap, is a black tween who likes to gather her hair up in two long bunches that resemble antlers as much as the trumpet-like shapes of the flower she’s named after. Snapdragon is a great example of those skills. With a few deft gestures, she cracks your ribcage right open, revealing the gooshy stuff inside, and massages and squeezes it all, producing intense emotions and, in the end, a feeling that you’ve been cleaned out, for the better. ![]() Leyh, best known for her work on Lumberjanes, has a real ability to perform a kind of open-heart surgery on her readers. Could this little YA book really be as good as I remembered it being? Welp, I read it again and the answer is yes. In the meantime, my feelings about it faded and dulled. I read Kat Leyh’s Snapdragon for the first time several months ago with zero context, when it arrived in a box of advance reader’s copies. ![]() 5/28/2023 0 Comments Smashed by Junji Ito![]() ![]() ![]() He is significantly skinnier and drawn, telling her that he won't eat until she does. She waves the man off, but she soon sees him again. She is approached by a stranger, a man about her age, who implores her to end her starvation diet. To explain, I'm going to ruin the first story in the collection for you. ![]() It is plenty creepy, however, in large part because the narratives don't follow the forms American readers expect. I don't know if "Smashed" is representative of Junji's other manga many of the customer reviews on suggest this isn't his best work. Hino is known for horror manga with titles such as "Hell Baby" and "Panorama of Hell " Tsutsui is an 84-year-old actor and celebrated science fiction novelist whose work challenges Japanese norms some of his books have been turned into manga and anime. I know little about the work of others Junji names as inspirations, but if you're a manga fan, you may recognize them: Hideshi Hino, Shinichi Koga and Yasutaka Tsutsui. Lovecraft as one of his influences that comes across clearly to anyone familiar with the late author's strange existential and metaphysical writings, such as "At the Mountains of Madness" and "The Call of Cthulhu." "Smashed" is a collection of 13 short stories, some better than others. ![]() 5/28/2023 0 Comments House of m brian michael bendis![]() ![]() ![]() Brian Michael Bendis wrote this eight-issue limited series with art by Olivier Coipel as the core story of a major Marvel Comics event as a follow-up to the "Planet X" and "Avengers Disassembled" event storylines. "House of M" was the story that nearly wiped out all the mutants on Earth. Without giving too much away, you want Spawn to take certain paths in the story, because you know he deserves it, and when he turns another way, you completely understand his reasoning and the regret it brings him. It's an experimental work for sure, that aims to make the reader relate to the confusion, pain and remorse that Spawn himself feels throughout his journey in the book, and it's a goal that's quickly met and exceeded. "Hellspawn" blends a unique minimalistic art style with a deep and remorseful story to try to create an atmosphere of pain. "Spawn" has never been a comic book for kids, but this volume takes that to a whole new level. ![]() ![]() He makes a deal with an evil being and is allowed to return to Earth, now with unearthly powers. Spawn is an antihero who was originally called Al Simmons before he was murdered and sent to Hell. Brian Michael Bendis' "Hellspawn" with art by Ashley Wood is the continuation of Todd MacFarlane's "Spawn," but it takes a much darker, more disturbing approach. ![]() |
